The Process

The example project below involves designing a small apartment / bedroom cutaway scene for a teenager with a specific hobby. I opted to design for the period and culture of 1980s Hong Kong with a teenager occupant who loves football.

The process always starts with taking the time to digest the brief requirements, and gathering the right references for the project.

After gathering and grouping my references, I create a set of 3D block out iterations done with the intent of introducing some variety into the building base type and dress them by sketching over.

My intent for the chosen occupant’s background was to reflect a sense of poverty, hence referencing of the ‘coffin homes’ of Hong Kong. I felt like the center iteration above reflected that the best, so I chose that as the main base for further development.

From there, I go back into 3D to further refine the block out and continue bringing up the level of detail with a linework pass.

Finally the colour pass and texturing is added along with appropriate blending to make sure the palette is cohesive and that all the materials in the scene read clearly.

Hope this little section above helps give a little insight into the workflow! Thanks for viewing till the end!
